Laptop Setup

Shopping for a new laptop or bringing your own?

Get Started Before Your First Day of Classes

Before proceeding with the following steps, ensure that your operating system (Windows, Mac) is up to date. Certain features mentioned below will become accessible once your status transitions from pre-student to student, usually around two weeks prior to your first class.

Anytime before classes begin:

• Access your Kellogg email and MS O365 online applications (downloadable version is available 2 weeks before class)
• Learn how to protect your data with Personal Backup Solutions
• Install Zoom and prep for remote classes

Two weeks before classes begin:

• Download and install your free copy of Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus
• Set up your Kellogg email on your laptop & phone
• Record your name pronunciation
• Access to Campus Groups
• Full Time MBA & Evening & Weekend MBA students only: if you haven't already, sign in to & configure your Slack account
• Access to the Northwestern Kellogg Student Directory
• Download and install Stata, if applicable
  
  • Install the Stata Kellogg custom menus. Open Stata and enter the following command:
    do https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/stata/menu.do
• Sign the Technical Support and Loaner Agreement (TSA)
  
  • Covers a student's responsibility for Kellogg-owned loaner equipment, including equipment replacement costs

When you are on campus:

• Connect to the Eduroam Wireless Network
  
  • Windows: Connecting to Eduroam on Windows
  • MacOS: Connecting to Eduroam on MacOS
  • Android: Connecting to Eduroam on Android
  • iPhone/iOS: Connecting to Eduroam on iOS (iPhone or iPad)
• Setup  printing on your laptop

• Reserve a Study Room: Reserving a Study Group Room

• Using Kellogg Virtual Desktop: Access a Windows virtual desktop to utilize a suite of applications and special software. This service, available through NUworkspace, provides software access from any web-browser. No software installation is required.
